Did you ever hear the song “When Love and Hate Collide?” Ever since I was in grade school, I have always wondered about the meaning of that song. Although I never really understood what it meant, this song somehow stuck to my brains until college.
As I was researching about a news event that I need to summarize and write a reaction on for a Humanities Subject, I got to read the news about a certain Samir Barai who is accused for allegedly murdering the man who was thought of as his wife’s lover.
It was interesting. The story itself was interesting. Although my topic should have been about social issues, I really got engrossed with the story. I even researched for the trial proceedings that have been written.
As I followed through the story, I got to know that Samir Barai was a successful lawyer. He had the perfect family life. He graduated from an Ivy League School and he married an equally smart and educated woman named Jenny Banazek.
Their love story was typical. The man pursues the woman and they got married. Their family can be the envy of almost everyone. The Joneses would even love to be in their shoes.
However, things are not always as what they seem to be. This is especially true with the family of Samir Barai and Jenny Banazek. In all the pleasant and perfect family façade they had, there remain skeletons in the closet.
With their hectic schedules as both practitioners of law, they did not find the time to spend time with each other as any happily married couples do. Their desire to create a financially stable family outranks their desire to be an emotionally stable one.
This started the problem and Jenny found a man who can fulfil her needs as a wife.
Samir Barai was blind to this at first but somehow the news came to him through a colleague at work.
Samir Barai was so angry at the thought that his wife was cheating on him with another man.
He decided to be mum about it. He decided to put a tail on his wife and even hired a detective to do this. His colleague’s allegations were true.
He wanted to catch his wife in the act and he tailed her to their lover’s nest.
Then when he can no longer bear the thought of his wife doing the unforgiveable act of cheating on him, he shot the man. However, he is no born shooter. He shot his wife accidentally.
As I read on it, I now understand the meaning of the song “When Love and Hate Collide.” Samir Barai had love and hate collide. He did the act of murder. He is guilty of murder as a result of love and hate colliding.
The judged sentenced Samir to reclusion perpetua. But as I view it, Samir Barai sentencing himself to be filled with both love and hate made him lose his life. His life that could still have been better if he chose not love let love and hate collide.
